FM12 / FM16 film magazine for Kiev 88 / 688 cameras

FM12 filmback FM12 filmback

General Notes

The magazine is intended for use with Kiev 88 / 688 single-lens reflex camera and 120 roll film.

The film magazine is available in two formats: 6x6cm format, with 12 frames per roll and 6x4.5cm format, with 16 frames per roll.

The magazine is available with chrome or black trim.

Loading the Film Magazine

The magazine can be loaded with the film in daylight (preferably in a shade).

Remove the magazine slide from the magazine, fold out the transport mechanism key, turn it counter-clockwise and pull the transport mechanism out of the magazine.

FM 12 filmback (disassembled)

Flip up the clip with the knurled knob and insert the take-up spool into the seat. Reset the clip to the initial position so that its driver would enter the spool end face slit.

Flip up the other clip, put the spool with the film into the seat and reset the clip to the initial position. The protruding center of the clip must enter the spool hole.

Turn the transport mechanism key clockwise to release the film clamp.

Pull out 8 to 9 cm (3 to 4 inches) of the backing paper from the film roll, pass it on the guide roller and guide the edge of the backing under the film clamp. Pass it on the second guide roller and insert the tongue of the backing paper into the take-up spool. Wind the backing by rotating the knurled knob clockwise. Make sure that the backing paper winds without skewing or crumpling of its edges.

Turn the transport mechanism key counter-clockwise to keep the backing paper in position under the film clamp. When the magazine is properly loaded, the backing paper dark side should face the lens. Fold out the film rewinding crank and set "1" in the frame counter window by rotating the crank in the direction reverse to the arrow.

Insert the transport mechanism into the magazine housing as far as it will go by smoothly turning the film rewinding crank in the arrow direction. Reset the crank to the initial position.

Turn the transport mechanism key clockwise, making sure that the transport mechanism is locked, and reset the key to the initial position.

Push the magazine slide home.

Open the film indicator window by pulling the base of the film speed remainder dial out.

Fold out the film rewinding crank and rotate it in the arrow direction until "1" appears in the film indicator window, which corresponds to the first frame in the film.

When loading the magazine with a film make sure that "1" is set in the frame counter window and film indicator window. If you fail to meet this requirement, the shots will go superimposed.

Set the film sensitivity on the film speed reminder dial by turning the dial disk until the film speed value coincides with the index.

Install the film magazine and prepare the camera for operation according to the Kiev 688 / 88 camera manual.

Unloading the Film Magazine

You can make shots until "12" (for 6x6 magazine) or "16" (for 6x4.5 magazine) appears in the frame counter window, indicating that the film has been fully used. Then fully insert the magazine slide and remove the film magazine from the camera by shifting the magazine lock button in the arrow direction.

Fold out the film rewinding crank and rotate it in the arrow direction until the film is rewound on the take-up spool. The rewinding should be carried out smoothly, without seizure. Check that the film rewinding is over by looking into the film indicator window.

Fold out the transport mechanism key and turn it clockwise. Remove the transport mechanism from the magazine. Flip up the clip with the knurled knob and remove the spool with exposed film. Return the clip to the initial position. Install the transport mechanism into the film magazine and lock it by turning the transport mechanism key clockwise.
